US Dollar Recovers Ahead of Kevin Warsh Jackson Hole Speech

The US dollar regained value as investors anticipate Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech on monetary policy at the Jackson Hole symposium.

The U.S. dollar recovered significant losses on Thursday as investors positioned themselves ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium. Market attention is focused on Friday's scheduled remarks by Kevin Warsh, the Federal Reserve Chair, who is expected to provide guidance on monetary policy and the U.S. Treasury's recent bond buy-back plans.

Currency traders have increased hedges to guard against a hawkish tone from Warsh or a reiteration that the central bank should avoid fiscal matters. This recovery follows a period of volatility after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took surprise action last week to support the bond market. The dollar's current strength is further supported by July inflation data showing the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index remained at 3.7% year-on-year, exceeding forecasts and suggesting inflation is stickier than anticipated.

While traders currently price in a hold for September, there is a 74% probability of a rate hike by December. Other contributing factors include the U.S. economy's 1.5% growth in the second quarter and ongoing concerns regarding U.S. fiscal credibility and soaring debt, which have driven a 25% monthly gain in bitcoin.
