Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro Tied Ahead of Brazil Election

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro are locked in a close race for the Brazilian presidency ahead of the October 4 election. Recent Datafolha polling indicates a technical tie in a potential runoff, with Lula leading 47% to 45%, while first-round projections place Lula at 40% and Bolsonaro at 36%.

Regional support is diverging as the vote approaches. Quaestor polling shows Lula gaining ground in Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, while Flavio Bolsonaro has expanded his lead in Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, launched his campaign in July with his father's support. Jair Bolsonaro is currently barred from office and serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting to overturn the 2022 election.

If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote on October 4, a second-round runoff is scheduled for October 25.
