U.S. Suspends Consular Services in Brazil Before Presidential Election

The United States Department of State suspended all consular services in Brazil on October 2, citing security concerns ahead of a contested presidential election.

The United States Department of State suspended consular services at all diplomatic missions in Brazil on Friday, October 2. The agency cited unspecified security concerns for the move, which occurs just before a closely contested first-round presidential election scheduled for Sunday.

In the election, incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is nearly tied with right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro. The suspension follows a period of deteriorating relations between the Trump administration and the Brazilian government. Tensions have been driven by new U.S. tariffs and ideological disagreements regarding organized crime.

Diplomatic friction escalated throughout the year, including an incident in July when Brazil blocked a U.S. delegation from entering the country. In August, the U.S. responded by revoking the visa of Brazil's top diplomat. The Department of State advised U.S. citizens seeking emergency assistance during this time not to visit embassies, consulates, or other diplomatic facilities.
