Trump Administration Cites National Security for Washington Arch
Defense and Homeland Security secretaries argue a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington is necessary to mitigate drone attacks and support national security.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin submitted sworn statements to a federal court arguing that Donald Trump's proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington is necessary for national security. The officials claim the structure would provide a significant elevation advantage to mitigate drone attacks and support security features without requiring structural modifications to existing plans.
This justification marks a shift from the project's initial proposal, which focused on honoring the country's 250th anniversary. The project currently faces a lawsuit from Vietnam War veterans who argue the arch is unconstitutional without congressional approval and would obstruct the view of Arlington National Cemetery from the Lincoln Memorial.
The National Capital Planning Commission is expected to grant final approval next week. The United States Department of Justice has indicated that construction could begin as early as November 5.
