Andy Burnham Pledges Relentless Action to Curb Channel Crossings

Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged to be "relentless" in tackling small boat crossings during a visit to Dover on Sunday. This commitment follows a migration crisis in Ceuta, Spain, where approximately 50,000 migrants entered the territory within 24 hours, resulting in at least 72 deaths. While Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez coordinated the return of 98% of those individuals to Morocco, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood rejected calls to emulate this mass return strategy, citing the specific complexities of the English Channel.

Provisional figures show 14,526 migrants have arrived by small boat so far this year, a 43% decrease compared to the previous year. Since Burnham took office on July 20, 2,057 people have crossed the Channel. To sustain this trend, the government has more than doubled the number of National Crime Agency officers tackling organized immigration crime, increasing the force from 376 to nearly 800 since 2025.

Additional measures include a new payment-by-results deal with France to increase beach enforcement and a reported 12% drop in asylum claims. However, the government faces criticism from Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, who argued that the administration has failed to "smash the gangs." Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have urged the government to rebuild ties with Europe to better combat criminal networks. Burnham stated he intends to maintain dialogue with the EU regarding the Schengen area and the development of safe routes to combat traffickers.
