Meta and Instinct Launch Autonomous AI Shopping Agents

Meta and startup Instinct released AI bots to handle autonomous transactions, sparking a conflict with Amazon over bot restrictions and data access.

Meta and the startup Instinct have launched agentic AI bots, Muse and Instinct, capable of performing autonomous transactions like booking flights and purchasing groceries for users. These tools aim to automate the shopping process, though they currently struggle with real-time pricing data and retailer security measures designed to block bots.

Early adoption of the Instinct service has been marred by technical failures, with some users reporting account bans and financial losses. In response to the rise of AI-driven disintermediation, Amazon has restricted bot crawling and withheld current pricing data. Amazon has also filed a lawsuit against Perplexity to prevent similar AI-driven access to its platform.

Executive perspectives on the shift differ. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has described current third-party AI shopping experiences as poor. Conversely, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested a future monetization strategy where Meta collects a small transaction fee from vendors for sales funneled through the Muse agent.
