Mizoram Railway Line Marks First Year of Operation

Mizoram officials celebrated the first anniversary of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2026. Inaugurated by Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, the 51.38-km line connects Bairabi in southern Assam to Sairang near Aizawl, placing the Mizoram capital on India's railway map for the first time.

In its first year, the line served more than 15 lakh passengers across 1,100 train trips, generating Rs 54 crore in ticket sales. Demand for services to Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi has been high, with the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express recording an average occupancy of over 145 percent. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw further expanded connectivity by inaugurating a passenger service to Silchar in January 2026.

Freight operations began on September 14, 2025, and have since delivered over 2,500 wagons of construction materials, foodgrains, and automobiles. The Ministry of Railways reports that the infrastructure, which consists of 153 bridges and 45 tunnels, has increased tourism in Mizoram by more than 86 percent and expanded market access for local bamboo crafts and handloom items.
