CENTCOM Seeks Unconventional Strategies to Pressure Iran

An intelligence officer at the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has emailed military analysts soliciting creative and unconventional ideas to pressure and punish Iran. This request follows weeks of U.S. airstrikes intended to degrade Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and force the Iranian government to negotiate.

President Donald Trump recently considered intensifying the campaign by targeting nuclear facilities, such as those at Pickaxe Mountain, or executing symbolic fireworks strikes. However, he postponed these attacks after the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia urged de-escalation. While Trump has threatened ground operations on Kharg Island, he has remained hesitant to deploy troops to avoid violating campaign promises regarding foreign wars and to prevent further casualties beyond the 18 U.S. service members already killed.

U.S. military and intelligence leadership, including the CIA and DIA, have warned that air power alone is unlikely to shift Iran's negotiating position because many facilities are deeply buried. General Dan Caine has specifically cited the limits of air power and a dwindling supply of air defense interceptors as critical constraints on the current strategy.
