Palantir Executive Warns Against Mob Rule in UK Contracts
Palantir Senior Vice-President Tom Watson urged the UK government to ignore political pressure and maintain procurement contracts based on the rule of law.
Tom Watson, a senior vice-president at Palantir and former Labour deputy leader, warned that the UK government should not allow mob rule to dictate the awarding of public procurement contracts. His comments come as Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces pressure from unions and Labour MPs to terminate agreements with the US tech firm, including a 330 million pound deal with the NHS.
Palantir is currently embroiled in multiple disputes over its operations and ties. The company is engaged in a legal battle with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who blocked a 50 million pound contract intended for Metropolitan police investigations. Critics point to the company's relationship with co-founder Peter Thiel and its provision of AI software to U.S. immigration authorities and the Israeli military as primary reasons for the backlash.
While Watson argues that procurement must follow the rule of law to avoid trouble, Labour MP Chi Onwurah raised concerns about the UK's strategic dependence on a single American company subject to U.S. legislation.
