Wang Yi Leads Global Diplomatic Push in New York

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with leaders from Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Turkmenistan, and Bahrain in New York to advance strategic partnerships and regional security.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conducted a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in New York City between May 26 and May 27, 2026, coinciding with a UN Security Council high-level meeting. Wang Yi focused on expanding comprehensive strategic partnerships and reinforcing multilateralism to protect the Global South.

In multiple sessions with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Wang Yi discussed trade, energy security, and the Middle Corridor. He specifically thanked Azerbaijan for providing logistics and security assistance during the emergency overland evacuation of Chinese citizens from Iran. Separately, Bayramov met with foreign ministers from Portugal and Turkmenistan to discuss energy security and Caspian Sea regional stability, while agreeing to upgrade diplomatic representations with Portugal to full embassy status.

Wang Yi also met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, agreeing to upgrade their strategic dialogue to a 3+3 mechanism involving public security authorities. He further collaborated with Turkmenistan's Rashid Meredov on natural gas development and with Bahrain's Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani on achieving a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East.

Parallel to these meetings, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulations with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen on May 28 to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Austria, emphasizing stability and mutual understanding in a volatile global environment.
