Trump Invites Teen Lifeguard to White House for Civilian Honor

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will invite 16-year-old California State Parks lifeguard Ryder Williams and his family to the White House to receive a high civilian honor. The invitation follows a viral social media video of Williams rescuing a 10-year-old boy who had been swept 15 yards offshore by massive waves at Seabright State Beach on Saturday, July 26, 2026.

Williams battled powerful surf and disappeared beneath waves while holding the child before a second lifeguard assisted in bringing the boy safely to shore. The video of the incident was first shared by Eric Trump, who called the rescue the best of America. Trump stated that the rescued child may also be invited to the ceremony. While the specific award is unconfirmed, potential honors include the Presidential Medal of Freedom or the Presidential Citizens Medal.

The rescue was one of approximately 34 performed by California State Parks lifeguards over the weekend as massive swells battered the coast. The National Weather Service urged residents to avoid Pacific Coast waters through Wednesday due to sneaker waves and rip currents. In response to the national attention, witness Scott Vander Dussen noted that the event could support House Resolution 1188, which seeks to officially classify lifeguards as first responders.
