Democrats Seize Control of Congress in 2026 Midterm Sweep

Democrats won majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, delivering a historic rebuke to President Donald Trump amid voter frustration over inflation and the war in Iran.

The Democratic Party won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, ending two years of unified Republican rule. The "blue wave" included flipping seven Senate seats, with historic victories in traditionally Republican strongholds such as Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, and Ohio. In the House, Democrats secured a decisive majority, with projections suggesting they could hold between 228 and 253 seats.

Beyond Congress, Democrats flipped governorships in Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Iowa. Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history in Georgia, while Gina Hinojosa became the first Latina governor of Texas. Other historic firsts included the election of Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim U.S. Senator in Michigan and Chris Pappas as the first openly gay man in the Senate. Conversely, Republican Byron Donalds became the first Black Republican governor in U.S. history after winning in Florida.

Exit polls indicate the results were a direct repudiation of President Donald Trump, driven by voter anger over high living costs, tariffs, and a protracted war with Iran. Trump initially claimed the GOP would have won in a "LANDSLIDE" had he been on the ballot, but he later stated he was "absolutely willing to accept those results." He has since signaled his intent to act as "Mr. Veto" to block Democratic legislation.

Incoming leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer have pledged a 100-day agenda focused on affordability and aggressive oversight of the Trump administration. This includes vowed investigations into the president's family businesses and the conduct of the war in Iran.
