U.S. State Department Imposes Visa Bans on TPLF Hardliners
The United States Department of State imposed visa restrictions on Tigray People's Liberation Front leaders and their families to prevent a return to civil war in Ethiopia.
The United States Department of State announced targeted visa restrictions on June 18, 2026, against hardline leaders of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and their immediate family members. The measures aim to prevent the reignition of conflict in northern Ethiopia and protect regional security following a period of escalating tension.
These restrictions follow a series of destabilizing actions, including clashes earlier in the year between TPLF-loyal Tigray Security Forces and the Ethiopian National Defense Force. In May, the TPLF violated the peace deal that ended the 2020-2022 civil war by reasserting control over the political administration in northern Ethiopia. This move included the election of TPLF Chair Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president by a restored legislative council.
Further complicating the situation, the TPLF and the reinstated Tigray regional council proposed legislation that opposition parties characterize as a blueprint for totalitarian control, featuring expanded security powers and mandatory mobilization. The U.S. government stated that these actions by TPLF hardliners undermine the resolution of the crisis in the Tigray region and threaten to destabilize the broader area.
