Alabama Noncitizen Pleads Guilty to Fraudulent Voting

Homero Ramos pleaded guilty to illegal voting in Alabama, prompting President Donald Trump and Republicans to push for mandatory citizenship proof in federal elections.

Mexican noncitizen Homero Ramos pleaded guilty on June 5, 2026, to two counts of fraudulent voting in Marion County, Alabama. Ramos registered to vote in the 2022 and 2024 general elections by presenting an Alabama driver's license and concealing his citizenship status.

The prosecution followed an investigation by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen. In 2023, Allen identified 3,251 registered voters with noncitizen identification numbers, subsequently removing 186 noncitizens from voter rolls in January 2026.

President Donald Trump and House Republicans are using the Ramos case to advocate for the SAVE America Act, which would mandate proof of U.S. citizenship for federal election registration. While the legislation has stalled in the Senate, House Republicans are currently attempting to attach the act to the National Defense Authorization Act to ensure its passage.
