Democrats Make Historic Gains in 2026 Midterm Elections

Democrats flipped key Senate and House seats and won the Georgia governorship as voters expressed dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's policies.

Millions of Americans voted in the 2026 midterm elections to determine the balance of power in Congress during the final two years of the Trump administration. Donald Trump monitored the returns from the White House as early results showed significant Democratic gains driven by voter dissatisfaction with inflation, healthcare, and military action in Iran.

Democrats secured several high-profile victories, including flipping a U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina with the win of Roy Cooper and winning a Senate seat in New Hampshire with Chris Pappas. In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff won reelection, and Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman governor of the state and the first Democratic governor since 2003. Democrats also flipped a Republican-held House seat in western North Carolina won by Jamie Ager.

Republicans maintained some strength, with Shelley Moore Capito winning a historic third consecutive Senate term in West Virginia and Ashley Moody winning a special election in Florida. In response to the Democratic surge, President Trump stated he would become "Mr Veto" and "veto everything" if Democrats secure a congressional majority.

At the state level, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment establishing a fundamental right to reproductive freedom. Other notable results included the reelection of Governors JB Pritzker in Illinois and Kathy Hochul in New York. Voting was disrupted in Arizona's Navajo Nation due to severe flooding.
