Iran Damages 20 U.S. Bases in 2026 Middle East Conflict
Iran launched a massive aerial campaign damaging at least 20 U.S. military bases across eight countries, causing billions in losses during a conflict starting in February 2026.
A four-month conflict between Iran and a coalition led by the United States and Israel began on February 28, 2026, with coalition strikes on Iranian targets. Iran retaliated with a large-scale aerial campaign, executing over 100 strikes against U.S. military installations across eight countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Iraq, and Oman. These strikes utilized saturation tactics and high-resolution intelligence from a Chinese satellite, the TEE-01B, to destroy or damage at least 228 structures.
Significant losses included the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, which was relocated to Florida, and the destruction of an E-3G AWACS in Saudi Arabia. In Kuwait, an Iranian F-5 fighter jet breached defenses to bomb Camp Buehring. Total U.S. aircraft losses are estimated at 42 planes, including F-35s and MQ-9 Reapers, with total repair costs estimated between $5 billion and $50 billion. Seven service members were killed and over 400 were injured.
During the conflict, the U.S. launched Operation Epic Fury, hitting over 13,000 targets in Iran. A daring search and rescue mission to recover an F-15E pilot in April resulted in the loss of multiple U.S. transport planes and helicopters. A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, though subsequent peace talks in Islamabad failed. While the U.S. government initially claimed victory, congressional aides criticized the administration for allegedly concealing the extent of the damage by requesting satellite companies to black out imagery.
