DMK Sets Three Conditions for Delimitation Bill Support

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam demands seat freeze extensions and a 50% seat increase before supporting the Indian government's constitutional amendment for delimitation.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has established three conditions for supporting a proposed constitutional amendment regarding a fresh delimitation exercise. The party demands a 25-year extension of the current freeze on seat redistribution based on the 1971 Census, a blanket 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats for all states, and a specific schedule of seats per state included within the legislative package.

These demands arise as the Government of India seeks the two-thirds majority required to pass the Bill after a previous defeat in April. While Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has worked to build consensus with the Opposition, the Congress party remains opposed. Rahul Gandhi reiterated this opposition in the Lok Sabha, while Mallikarjun Kharge demanded the appearance of Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha to discuss police actions against student protesters.
