S. Jaishankar Begins Diplomatic Tour of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, and Ethiopia
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar began a five-day visit to West and East Africa to strengthen ties with the Global South and advance bilateral cooperation.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar began a five-day official tour of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, and Ethiopia on October 6, 2026. The visit, which runs through October 10, aims to deepen bilateral partnerships and strengthen India's solidarity with the Global South.
In Ghana, Jaishankar is engaging in discussions focused on pharmaceutical development, agricultural mechanization, and IT partnerships. These talks align with President John Dramani Mahama's "Accra Reset" philosophy and Ghana's broader goals for industrialization and job creation. This diplomatic engagement follows July meetings between Indian officials and Ghanaian maritime authorities regarding port sector cooperation and the welfare of Indian seafarers.
While in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Jaishankar is scheduled to chair the Regional Heads of Mission Conference. During a transit stop in the city, he met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the broader tour will cover trade, economic cooperation, capacity building, and people-to-people ties.
