UK Launches £5.8 Billion Pride in Place Programme

The UK government launched a £5.8 billion regeneration scheme to revitalize 284 deprived communities through local leadership and long-term funding.

The Government of the United Kingdom has launched the £5.8 billion pride in place programme to regenerate 284 deprived communities across the country. The initiative provides up to £2 million annually for 10 years per community, allowing funds to cover running costs and requiring local neighbourhood boards to lead decision-making processes.

In Grimsby, the North East Lincolnshire Council is using £20 million from the programme, combined with previous government-backed funds, to convert derelict buildings into community spaces, leisure facilities, and youth centers. The scheme represents a shift in strategy under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who prioritized the revival of town centres.

Communities Secretary Angela Rayner stated the programme is a break from past approaches by putting local people in charge, asserting that there will be "no more ‘Whitehall knows best’." While some local business leaders are optimistic about Grimsby's transition toward wind energy and renewables, others remain skeptical due to previous failed regeneration efforts and persistent antisocial behavior.

The Centre for Cities has criticized the initiative, arguing that the funding levels may be insufficient to address systemic issues such as transport and job access, which often fall outside the control of local authorities.
