Senator Chris Murphy Accuses Pentagon of Hiding Iran War Costs
Senator Chris Murphy alleges the Department of Defense is unconstitutionally concealing the costs of the war with Iran after being denied access to a Qatari air base.
U.S. Senator Chris Murphy accused the Department of Defense of conducting a coordinated and unconstitutional campaign to hide the true costs and implications of the war with Iran from Congress and the American public. The allegations follow a regional visit where the Pentagon denied Murphy access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and refused to provide a briefing on the conflict, which began in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive.
The Department of Defense stated the restriction adhered to a March 3, 2026, directive from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth limiting travel to the region, asserting that the guidance is applied evenly. Murphy countered that in more than a dozen visits to the Middle East as a member of Congress, he had never previously been denied access to military facilities.
While the Pentagon blocked his military access, Secretary of State Marco Rubio facilitated the trip. Murphy met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss regional diplomacy. During his time in Doha, Murphy praised the role of American universities in Qatar for promoting U.S. values, despite reports that Qatar has provided nearly $9 billion in gifts and contracts to U.S. academic institutions to exert political influence.
