Hungary Seeks U.S. Tariff Waiver Over Russian Energy Imports

The Government of Hungary is requesting that the United States waive potential tariffs on its goods following the enactment of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. Signed into law by President Donald Trump on September 19, 2026, the legislation authorizes tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian crude oil or natural gas that continue making new purchases.

Hungary has been one of the largest importers of Russian oil for 15 years under the leadership of Viktor Orban. Prime Minister Peter Magyar has pledged to end this pro-Russia policy and diversify the nation's energy imports.

To facilitate this transition, Marton Hajdu, chair of the Foreign Policy Committee at Hungary’s Parliament, met with U.S. officials in Washington. Hajdu requested assistance in reducing energy reliance on Russia and sought a tariff exemption to protect Hungarian goods while the country shifts its energy sources.
