Andy Burnham Urges Scottish Government to Devolve Local Power

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is visiting North Lanarkshire to call for greater devolution of power from the Scottish Government to local communities.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is traveling to North Lanarkshire on Friday to deliver a speech urging the Scottish Government to collaborate with Whitehall to devolve power to local communities. The visit is intended to promote a shift in governance that empowers regional authorities and local populations.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander described the visit as a substantive and genuine offer to empower Scottish regions. Alexander noted that Burnham's previous tenure as Mayor of Manchester serves as evidence of his commitment to the practical application of devolution.

Scottish Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn stated that the Scottish Government remains open to adopting the Prime Minister's effective ideas regarding public service reform. However, Flynn accused Burnham of hypocrisy for re-examining relations with the European Union while continuing to reject a second independence vote. Flynn maintained that the only true shortcut to devolving power is through an independence referendum, arguing that decision-making should be returned to the Scottish people.
