Serbian Prosecutor Targeted With Spyware Over Trump Tower Probe

Serbian prosecutor Rade Bajić was targeted with mercenary spyware while investigating an illegal development scheme involving President Aleksandar Vučić and the Trump family.

Prosecutor Rade Bajić was targeted with advanced mercenary spyware while investigating an allegedly illegal scheme to facilitate the construction of a Trump tower in Belgrade. Analysis by Citizen Lab indicates a high confidence that Bajić's iPhone was targeted, possibly with Pegasus spyware, following an Apple notification in August.

The investigation centers on accusations that President Aleksandar Vučić ordered the removal of legal protections from the General Staff building, a protected monument, to allow for a $500 million development project involving Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner. While senior members of Vučić's regime face indictment for abuse of office, Vučić has denied wrongdoing, stating, "I fought for my people."

Jared Kushner halted the development plans after the charges became public. Representatives for the Trump family and Kushner have denied engaging in "pay to play" arrangements or influencing the decision to strip the building's protected status.
