UN Concludes First Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva

The United Nations concluded its first Global Dialogue on AI Governance, calling for an inclusive global system to protect children and ensure equitable technology access.

The United Nations concluded its inaugural Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva on July 7, 2026. The event marked the first time all UN member states gathered to establish a collaborative global governance system for AI. Secretary-General António Guterres called for a mechanism to ensure AI benefits all humanity, stating that any future agreement must be "worthy of global trust" and prioritize the safety of children against digital manipulation.

During the sessions, the European Union advocated for a risk-based, human-centric approach grounded in international human rights law. Meanwhile, UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock warned of the technology's darker applications, noting that 99 percent of deepfake content is sexually suggestive. The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI provided a report assessing the technology's risks and opportunities to help shift the conversation from abstract ethics toward concrete implementation.

Parallel to the main dialogue, the Digital Cooperation Organization launched the Ethical AI Guidebook for Policymakers. This initiative, supported by the Saudi Data and AI Authority and the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics, aims to close the capacity gap for the World Digital Majority. Secretary-General Deemah AlYahya argued that the current architecture of the AI age is being designed without the input of more than half the world's nations.
