Trump Administration Pays RWE $1.22 Billion to Cancel Wind Projects

The Trump administration reached a $1.22 billion settlement on August 6 with German energy developer RWE to cancel offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana. Under the terms of the agreement, RWE will redirect these funds into fossil fuel infrastructure. This includes a $900 million investment for a 16% stake in Woodside Energy’s Louisiana LNG project and $300 million for natural gas turbine reservations and peaking projects.

This agreement marks the fifth such buyout by the administration, bringing the total expenditure to approximately $3.92 billion to stifle offshore wind development in favor of natural gas. RWE stated there is "no path forward to permit these projects in the U.S. for the foreseeable future."

The administration's strategy of paying developers to relinquish leases faces legal challenges from several Democratic-led states. These states argue that the settlements are unlawful and violate the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.
