India Delivers 250 Tonne Bridge Consignment to Sri Lanka

The Government of India delivered a third consignment of Bailey bridges to Sri Lanka on August 8, 2026, to assist in the reconstruction of rural roads destroyed by Cyclone Ditwah. The delivery consists of five modular bridges weighing over 250 metric tonnes and valued at more than $5 million. During an official ceremony in Colombo, India's Deputy High Commissioner Maitrey K transferred the materials to Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Co-operative Development, Upali Samarasinghe.

This aid is part of a larger $450 million reconstruction package announced by Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in December 2025. The total package comprises $350 million in concessional Lines of Credit and $100 million in grants. Indian Army engineers will install the bridges across the island to restore vital connectivity and address transport bottlenecks for isolated communities.

The infrastructure support follows the devastation of Cyclone Ditwah in November, which killed more than 640 people and caused nearly SLR 75 billion in losses to the Sri Lankan Road Development Authority. India had previously launched Operation Sagar Bandhu on November 28 to provide immediate relief and recovery assistance in the wake of the disaster.
