Congress Demands Supreme Court Probe Into Ram Mandir Theft

The Indian National Congress is demanding a Supreme Court-supervised investigation into the theft of devotee offerings at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, alleging a cover-up in the current Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. The party's request follows an SIT chargesheet that identified 105 instances of unauthorized currency removal.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned a 21-day delay between the recovery of ₹2.25 lakh from a bathroom on June 4, 2026, and the registration of a First Information Report on June 25. Ramesh criticized the SIT for naming only eight individuals as accused while treating temple management officials—including general secretary Champat Rai, trustee Anil Mishra, and construction in-charge Gopal Rao—as witnesses.

Ramesh further questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the matter and asked if the investigation examined potential links to the senior leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
