Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin Visits Kyiv to Support EU Bid

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrived in Kyiv on July 23, 2026, for a one-day diplomatic visit to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. The visit marks Martin's first trip to Ukraine since Ireland assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1. He pledged that support for Ukraine and its bid for EU membership would be a central priority during Ireland's six-month term.

Discussions focused on Ukraine's sovereignty, EU accession negotiations, and the 2030 Roadmap on Ireland-Ukraine Partnership. Martin also visited neighborhoods damaged by Russian strikes and met with humanitarian organizations delivering Irish-funded aid. To date, Ireland has provided over 500 million euros for humanitarian, energy, and non-lethal military assistance.

A primary point of contention involves Aughinish Alumina, a Russian-owned refinery in County Limerick. President Zelenskyy has called for EU-level sanctions to stop the plant from exporting materials to Russia, alleging that such companies keep supplying the aggressor with essential materials. The Government of Ireland is currently investigating whether the refinery's exports are fueling Russian military hardware. This diplomatic effort occurs against a backdrop of domestic instability in Ukraine, where protests followed Zelenskyy's dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and army commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
