Fareed Zakaria Warns of India-US Diplomatic Trust Deficit
Fareed Zakaria claims India-US relations are in bad shape due to a lack of trusted communication channels despite long-term strategic necessity.
Journalist Fareed Zakaria stated in an interview with ANI on July 17, 2026, that diplomatic relations between India and the United States are currently in "bad shape." He attributed this decline to the absence of a "trusted channel" for communicating concerns between the two nations.
Zakaria argued that India's economic growth depends heavily on its relationship with the U.S., suggesting that India needs a trade deal more than the U.S. does. He noted that a reluctance to establish effective diplomatic channels is hindering the standard of living for average Indians.
Despite these immediate tensions, Zakaria predicted a strong long-term partnership. He cited the strategic necessity of counterbalancing China and deep people-to-people connections as primary drivers for future cooperation. Additionally, Zakaria described the Islamabad MoU for peace between the U.S. and Iran as "completely dead" and questioned the ideological consistency of President Donald Trump's foreign policy.
