Retired Teacher Backs Susan Collins Over Troy Jackson

Retired Maine public school teacher Linda Baker announced her support for Susan Collins, citing the senator's legislative success in restoring Social Security benefits to retired public workers. Baker credited Collins with authoring and passing the Social Security Fairness Act, which repealed the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision.

This legislative action restored full benefits to more than 25,000 retired Maine teachers and public servants. The Maine Education Association characterized the repeal of these restrictions as a "historic victory" for the state's public workforce.

In her statement, Baker contrasted Collins' record with that of Troy Jackson, the former president of the Maine Senate. Baker alleged that Maine students fell behind in core subjects and the state suffered from teacher shortages during Jackson's tenure in Augusta.
