UK MPs Accept £400,000 in Hospitality Gifts
Members of Parliament from the Labour and Conservative parties accepted nearly £400,000 in complimentary hospitality for events between January and July 2026.
Members of Parliament from both the Labour and Conservative parties accepted nearly £400,000 in complimentary hospitality for concerts, sporting events, and other gatherings between January and July 2026. High-profile recipients include Education Secretary Lucy Powell, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and shadow chancellor Mel Stride also declared accepting tickets to events such as Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham declared approximately £6,000 in hospitality. The rise in declared value follows a 2024 controversy involving Keir Starmer, which led to transparency rule changes requiring more consistent and valued disclosures on registers. A Labour party spokesperson stated that all declarations were made in line with these strengthened ministerial and parliamentary rules.
Transparency advocates from Spotlight on Corruption and Transparency International UK warned that such gifts are lobbying tactics that may compromise judgment. Sue Hawley, director of Spotlight on Corruption, criticized MPs for failing to learn from previous freebie-gate scandals, while Transparency International director Duncan Hames urged MPs to consider the motives behind the invitations.
