Chinese Automakers Shift to European Production at Paris Motor Show
More than 20 Chinese automotive brands are localizing production in Europe to bypass trade hurdles and weak domestic demand.
More than 20 Chinese automotive brands are showcasing vehicles and expanding partnerships at the Paris Motor Show. Facing weak domestic demand and restrictions in the United States, companies including BYD, Xpeng, and Geely are shifting toward localizing production within Europe to bypass trade hurdles.
Xpeng is implementing an in-Europe, for-Europe strategy with a goal to sell 500,000 vehicles annually in the region by 2030. Other manufacturers are establishing plants in Spain and Hungary, including BYD, which plans to produce cars in Hungary. Geely is collaborating with Ford Motor at a plant in Valencia, Spain.
This expansion occurs as the European Union seeks to curb low-cost Chinese imports. EU officials noted a recent deal with Beijing that could halve Chinese hybrid car exports over the next four years. French President Emmanuel Macron characterized the current state of European industry as a life or death moment, while Chinese firms continue to integrate into the market through sponsorships and joint ventures with established manufacturers like Stellantis.
