Donald Trump Credits Tariff Policies for Historic Trade Deficit Drop
Donald Trump announced that his tariff policies reduced the U.S. trade deficit by 55% and drove a surge in factory construction jobs.
Donald Trump announced on April 4, 2026, that his administration's tariff policies achieved a 55% reduction in the United States trade deficit, a figure he described as the "biggest drop in history." Using Truth Social, the president attributed this shift and an increase in factory construction jobs to rapid onshoring and heightened investment prompted by the tariffs.
Trump supported these claims by citing a March jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which showed 178,000 new jobs, surpassing economist forecasts. He stated that his economic policies created an "enormously powerful engine of Economic Growth" that nothing can slow down. These gains coincided with the unemployment rate falling to 4.3% in March from 4.4% in February, although the labor force participation rate declined to 61.9% during the same period.
In addition to the economic data, Trump linked these developments to his broader administration agenda, which includes ongoing efforts to eliminate a nuclear Iran.
