Nigeria Endorses China's Global Governance Initiative
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria endorsed China's Global Governance Initiative to reform international institutions and increase the influence of the Global South.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has endorsed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), a platform launched by President Xi Jinping on September 1. The initiative seeks to reform international financial systems and the UN Security Council to increase the influence of the Global South.
During a high-level seminar in Abuja, Counselor Dong Hairong of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China presented the GGI as a tool to address historical injustices and a public good provided by China. The GGI serves as one of four pillars in China's broader vision for a community with a shared future for mankind, alongside the Global Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives.
While Nigerian officials and academics supported the initiative's focus on multilateralism and sovereign equality, some participants cautioned that local leadership and internal reforms remain more critical for Nigeria's economic transformation than changes to global governance. Joseph Tegbe, Director General of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership, reaffirmed the commitment to deepening cooperation between the two nations.
