Pashinyan and Aliyev Mark Anniversary of Washington Peace Summit

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a phone call on August 8, 2026, to mark the first anniversary of the Washington Peace Summit. The leaders reviewed the normalization of relations since the August 8, 2025, trilateral meeting at the White House, which was facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

During the call, the leaders focused on growing economic ties, specifically the export of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia and cargo transit through Azerbaijani territory. They also discussed the implementation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), a transport corridor designed to link mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave and reduce the regional isolation of Armenia.

Pashinyan declared that the conflict between the two nations has ended and peace has been established, referring to the 2025 summit as a turning point. However, he noted that the peace agenda is not yet fully implemented. He specified that the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations, which was initialed by foreign ministers in Washington, still requires formal signing and ratification. Additionally, the two countries must continue the process of border delimitation.

Both leaders credited Donald Trump and the United States government for their roles in advancing the peace process and signing the Peace Declaration.
