Trump Alleges China Stole 220 Million Voter Files in 2020

President Donald Trump claimed China compromised millions of voter files and pushed for the SAVE America Act during a primetime address on election security.

President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address from the White House East Room on July 16, 2026, alleging that the People's Republic of China executed the "largest compromise of election data in history." Trump claimed China illicitly acquired 220 million U.S. voter files starting during the 2020 cycle to influence the election and ensure his defeat. He accused a "deep state" of suppressing this intelligence and ordered the Department of Justice, FBI, and CIA to investigate the cover-up.

To support his claims, the administration released a trove of declassified documents and a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) review alleging approximately 278,000 noncitizens were registered to vote, with over 250,000 in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Trump used these findings to urge Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would mandate photo ID and proof of citizenship for voting. He also directed the FBI to investigate registration fraud in Muskegon, Michigan.

Democratic leaders and some Republicans dismissed the claims as baseless conspiracy theories intended to delegitimize the 2026 midterm elections. The Government of China rejected the allegations as "pure fabrications and malicious smears." Additionally, U.S. intelligence assessments and election experts noted that while foreign actors possess capabilities to access data, there is no evidence that any foreign power altered the technical aspects of the 2020 vote tallies. Several major networks, including ABC and NBC, declined to air the address live, prompting Trump to call them "cowards" and suggest their licenses be revoked.
