DOE Selects Four Federal Sites for AI Data Centers

The United States Department of Energy selected four federal sites to host artificial intelligence data centers and energy generation projects. The chosen locations include the Idaho National Laboratory, Oak Ridge Reservation, Savannah River Site, and Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the initiative as a step to accelerate the "next Manhattan Project" to ensure U.S. leadership in AI and energy. He stated that these sites are uniquely positioned to host data centers and power generation to bolster grid reliability, strengthen national security, and reduce energy costs.

This initiative follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which directs the departments of energy, interior, and defense to authorize data center construction on federal lands. The order mandates streamlined environmental reviews and permitting processes, promotes the use of Brownfield and Superfund sites, and establishes financial support through loans, tax incentives, and grants for qualifying projects.

The selection process follows an April request for information. Formal solicitations are expected in the coming months, with the department aiming to select private sector partners by the end of 2025.
