Mike Rogers Calls for End to Canada Tariff War
Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers released a campaign ad urging an end to tariffs with Canada to attract independent voters in Michigan.
Republican candidate Mike Rogers released a campaign advertisement calling for an end to the tariff war with Canada, stating that "Canada is not our enemy." The ad features Rogers in a bar with a Labatt Blue beer during a Red Wings game, a strategy intended to appeal to Michigan residents and independent voters burdened by trade costs.
Rogers is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan and currently trails Democratic opponent Abdul El-Sayed in a race considered a toss-up. The ad avoids explicitly naming President Donald Trump, who endorsed Rogers and implemented the tariffs. Critics pointed out that Rogers previously called the tariffs "necessary" in September and supported keeping the Gordie Howe International Bridge closed to maintain leverage against Canada.
Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed responded to the advertisement by remarking that Rogers "must have had one too many of those Labatts."
