UK Government to Nationalize Avanti West Coast in March 2027

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced Avanti West Coast will enter public ownership on March 7, 2027, alongside a £50 million upgrade for Euston station.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced that Avanti West Coast will be nationalized on March 7, 2027, coinciding with the expiration of the operator's current contract. The decision follows chronic performance issues, including poor punctuality and cancellation rates that reached 7.1% between April and June. Alexander and Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated the move will prioritize passengers over shareholders, ending a history of overcrowding and high ticket prices.

As part of the announcement, the government committed £50 million to upgrade Euston station over the next three years. This funding includes £11 million for toilets, seating, and waiting areas, as well as a plan to phase out last-minute platform announcements within one year. An additional £10 million will be invested in other West Coast Main Line stations, with new satellite technology deployed to improve 5G and WiFi connectivity.

Avanti Managing Director Andy Mellors defended the company's record, citing fleet refurbishments and capacity increases, but pledged to ensure a seamless transition. The nationalization of Avanti, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, is part of a broader strategy to bring all Department for Transport contracted services under state control. This program already includes Chiltern Railways and Great Western Railway, with Great British Railways expected to assume full oversight by 2027.
