Polls Show US Divided Over Trump Immigration Crackdown

New polls reveal a deeply divided US public as the Trump administration pursues mass deportations and challenges birthright citizenship in the Supreme Court.

Recent polling indicates a sharp divide in American public opinion as Donald Trump pursues an aggressive immigration-enforcement agenda. An AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that 60% of U.S. adults believe the country is no longer a great place for immigrants. Approximately one-third of all adults, and over half of Hispanic adults, reported that they or someone they know faced heightened scrutiny, detentions, or deportations over the past year.

This sentiment follows the deployment of thousands of immigration agents and military personnel into cities, including Minneapolis, where ICE or CBP officers killed two unarmed U.S. citizens. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of the United States is deliberating an executive order from the Trump administration that would restrict birthright citizenship to children with at least one citizen parent. Public opinion on the issue is split, with 49% agreeing and 49% disagreeing on whether children of illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship at birth.

Other data reflects growing anxiety among native-born citizens. An Associated Press poll of 2,596 adults found that 61% of Americans worry that native-born citizens are losing economic, political, and cultural influence due to immigration. Further polling from Harvard/Harris and The Economist highlights a stark partisan divide, with a majority of Republicans favoring fewer legalized immigrants and 58% of Americans believing the Democratic Party supports open borders.
