Donald Trump Cancels Livestream of Nidal Hasan Execution
President Donald Trump canceled plans to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan following protests from retired military leaders.
President Donald Trump canceled the Pentagon's plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. The decision follows an open letter from 72 retired generals, admirals, and senior military officers who called the proposed broadcast a "barbaric abuse of authority" and warned it could turn Hasan into a martyr.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had originally announced the livestream to demonstrate the serious consequences of such crimes. While Trump initially stated he absolutely approved of the initiative, he later reversed his position, noting that many people would prefer not to watch the event via streaming or other visual devices. He acknowledged that while a public broadcast might have served as a strong deterrent, the event will not be streamed.
Major Hasan remains scheduled for execution by firing squad on December 3. Under the revised plan, only the immediate families of the victims will be permitted to witness the execution in person.
