Andy Burnham Pledges to Maintain Pension Triple Lock

Andy Burnham, the incoming Prime Minister, pledged to uphold the state pension triple lock and 2024 manifesto commitments while proposing sustainable welfare reforms.

Incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed he will maintain the state pension triple lock, ensuring the full state pension rises by at least 2.5 percent in April to approximately £247 per week. Speaking during a Reddit session, Burnham stated the Labour Party must honor its 2024 manifesto commitments, which include full support for Ukraine and the pursuit of a more ambitious trade agreement with the European Union.

To address the Department for Work and Pensions benefits bill, Burnham rejected crude cuts that would increase poverty. He instead proposed a sustainable strategy focused on building more council homes to lower housing benefit costs and shifting the education system away from a university-centric model toward technical qualifications and apprenticeships. He also proposed extending free bus travel for 16- to 18-year-olds nationwide.

Despite these pledges, the Office for Budget Responsibility warned that the triple lock could cost an additional GBP15.5 billion by the end of the decade. Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, argued that the policy is on an unsustainable fiscal path and warned that economic realities may eventually force a redesign of the guarantee.
