South Korea Probes Leak of Presidential Aircraft Passenger List
Presidential Chief of Staff Lim Kwang-hyun ordered an investigation after passport data for President Lee Jae Myung and 167 others was leaked online.
The South Korean government is investigating a significant data breach involving the personal information of President Lee Jae Myung and 167 other individuals. The leaked data, which appeared on a subscription-based cybersecurity website on June 2, contained names, dates of birth, job positions, and passport details. The list pertained to a June trip to Belgium, France, and Italy for a South Korea-Belgium summit and a Group of Seven summit.
Those affected include First Lady Kim Hea Kyung, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, various Cabinet ministers, journalists, and undisclosed security and medical personnel. Presidential Chief of Staff Lim Kwang-hyun convened an emergency meeting to address the breach, calling it a serious matter and demanding a comprehensive review of security protocols for overseas trips to prevent future occurrences.
The National Police Agency has launched a probe into the exposure, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is treating the event as a leak rather than a hacking incident. As a corrective measure, the ministry is reissuing passports to all affected officials and conducting technical inspections of related email accounts and computers.
