John Swinney Demands Scottish Independence Referendum Powers

First Minister John Swinney announced from Bute House that his government will press Prime Minister Andy Burnham for the powers to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence. Swinney identified securing a route to another referendum as a key priority and called for the devolution of energy and economic powers to ensure Scottish energy wealth benefits its own citizens.

Swinney expressed a desire for a constructive dialogue and a fresh start in relations between the Scottish and UK governments. He signaled a preference for direct one-on-one meetings with the Prime Minister, explicitly opposing the appointment of Douglas Alexander as Scottish secretary.

Regarding the transition to net zero, Swinney addressed the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil fields. He stated that any decisions on consent must be based on climate compatibility assessments while balancing energy security and legal obligations.
