Oil Prices Fluctuate as Trump Denies Iran Concessions
Oil prices shifted as President Donald Trump denied offering sanctions relief to Iran while Qatar continues mediation efforts to avoid further conflict repercussions.
Oil prices experienced volatility between Tuesday and Wednesday, with Brent crude fluctuating around $103 and West Texas Intermediate near $89. Prices initially fell due to a rebound in Middle East exports, which reached approximately 16.3 million barrels per day in September, the highest level since the US-Israeli war on Iran began in February. This recovery was supported by the Government of Saudi Arabia resuming tanker loadings at the port of Yanbu following the restart of the East-West Pipeline.
Donald Trump caused a price uptick on Wednesday after using Truth Social to deny reports that he was willing to offer sanctions relief or release frozen funds to Iran in exchange for nuclear concessions. He stated, "I offered them NOTHING!" despite ongoing shuttle diplomacy facilitated by the Government of Qatar to establish common ground between the US and Iran.
To stabilize domestic energy costs before the November mid-term elections, the United States Department of Energy offered up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The White House also urged the European Union to draw down emergency diesel stocks and is considering allowing the sale of red-dyed diesel as an alternative to an export ban. Separately, reports indicate Trump may support sanctions relief for Russia to secure prisoner releases, which could further impact commodity trade.
