UN Security Council Deadlocked Over Secretary-General Succession

The United Nations Security Council remains deadlocked over a successor to Antonio Guterres as the United States blocks leading candidates to force UN reform.

The United Nations Security Council is deadlocked over the election of a new Secretary-General to succeed Antonio Guterres, with only 76 days remaining before the current term expires. In the sixth round of anonymous straw polls, UNCTAD head Rebecca Grynspan led with nine positive votes, followed by former Guyana Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birket and IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi.

Despite their leads, all three top candidates are blocked from the required ten votes without a veto, as each received two negative votes from permanent members. Other candidates, including Olara Otunnu, Macky Sall, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, and Ivonne A-Baki, also faced significant opposition from permanent members.

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump is holding the United States veto because none of the current candidates meet his standards for drastic UN reform. This stalemate persists despite strong international sentiment to elect the first female Secretary-General or a representative from Latin America and the Caribbean. The ongoing deadlock may force the council to consider new candidates, such as Lana Nusseibeh or Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu.
