Howard Lutnick Details $550 Billion Japan Investment Profit Split
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that the U.S. will eventually take 90% of profits from a $550 billion Japanese investment in domestic manufacturing.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced a profit-sharing structure for a $550 billion investment deal finalized last week between the United States and Japan. Under the terms, the U.S. and Japan will share profits equally until Japan recoups its initial $550 billion capital. Following the recovery of that capital, the split will shift to 90% for the U.S. and 10% for Japan.
The investment funds American-based projects selected by the U.S. government and approved by President Donald Trump. These projects specifically target domestic manufacturing priorities, including the production of antibiotics and the construction of nuclear power plants. To fund these commitments, the Government of Japan will need to borrow money.
In exchange for the investment, Japan will be subject to 15% baseline tariffs and specific sector-specific levies. Lutnick asserted that the arrangement remains beneficial for Japan because its consumers will benefit from lower tariff rates.
