Oil Prices Fluctuate as Saudi Exports Recover Amid US-Iran Tension

Oil prices fluctuated as Saudi Arabia restored pipeline flows and Middle East exports rebounded, while President Donald Trump denied offering sanctions relief to Iran.

Global oil prices experienced significant volatility between September 29 and October 1, 2026, driven by recovering Middle East supplies and stalled diplomacy between the United States and Iran. Brent crude futures saw a strong September, gaining approximately 14%, though prices fluctuated near $98 per barrel as the market weighed supply rebounds against geopolitical risks.

Donald Trump denied reports that he was willing to offer sanctions relief or release frozen funds to Iran in exchange for nuclear program concessions, stating, "I offered them NOTHING!" While Qatari mediators attempted to facilitate shuttle diplomacy and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi received a U.S. response to a ceasefire proposal, tensions remained high. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the Iranian delegation to leave the U.S. following the UN General Assembly, and Trump asserted that the U.S. has "total control of the waterway."

Supply pressures eased as the Government of Saudi Arabia restarted its East-West Pipeline and resumed tanker loadings at the Red Sea port of Yanbu, bypassing the Iran-blocked Strait of Hormuz. Middle East exports rebounded to approximately 16 million barrels per day in September, the highest level since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began in February. To further stabilize markets and combat record-high domestic diesel prices ahead of midterm elections, the Trump administration urged the European Union to draw down emergency diesel inventories and considered allowing the sale of red-dyed diesel.

Additional market factors included an unexpected rise in U.S. crude inventories to 427.3 million barrels and a coordinated release of up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve by the U.S. Department of Energy.
