UK Government Shifts August Benefit Payments to Friday

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have adjusted payment schedules for millions of benefit and state pension recipients due to August 2026 bank holidays. Payments originally scheduled for Monday, August 31, will be issued early on Friday, August 28. This adjustment applies across the United Kingdom and covers Universal Credit, State Pension, Personal Independence Payment, Jobseeker's Allowance, and Carer's Allowance.

For state pensioners, the early payment specifically affects those with National Insurance numbers ending in 00 to 19. Eligible pensioners can receive up to £965.20 every four weeks following a 4.8% uplift in April. Child Benefit recipients also saw a 3.8% rate increase, resulting in £108.20 every four weeks for claimants with one child. In Scotland, the August 3 bank holiday caused separate disruptions; HMRC noted that Child Benefit payments due on that day were shifted to August 4 or 5, though the DWP clarified that Bacs remained open for other Scottish-only holidays.

Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms stated the early disbursement ensures families and older people receive funds without disruption. However, the DWP warned that because this is a date shift rather than an extra payment, recipients must budget for a longer gap until September. This announcement coincides with Prime Minister Keir Starmer signaling intentions to make welfare support more conditional to reduce the national welfare bill.
