Foreign Investors Pour Record $2 Billion Into Brazilian Stocks
Foreign investors injected a record 10.06 billion reais into Brazilian stocks following a first-round election lead by opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.
Foreign investors poured a record net 10.06 billion reais ($2.01 billion) into Brazilian stocks listed in Sao Paulo on October 5. This surge represents the highest single-day inflow on record for the B3 SA exchange.
The market reaction followed a first-round presidential election on Sunday in which opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro won 47% of the vote, leading incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who received 45%. The Ibovespa equity benchmark responded with a 7.7% jump on Monday, marking the largest increase in more than six years.
Investors are reacting to the results with hopes that a Bolsonaro victory would resolve Brazil's fiscal problems and create conditions for future interest-rate cuts.
